Just yesterday I saw a pin on Pinterest for a mini coloring tote (here), that had space for a few crayons on it. Easy to carry around for kids, perfect for on the go. But when I sewed it up, I noticed that it was harder to sew because it was thicker. So, I modified and altered it.
Cut:
(2) 12x4 Straps
(2) 10x8 Body pieces
(2) 8x6 Pocket pieces
Take one body piece and fold down on short edge 1/2", press. Fold down another 1/2" and press again. Repeat for other body piece.
Take one strap and fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and press. Open and fold in edges to middle line, press again. Repeat for other strap.
Take one pocket piece and fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press, and repeat for other piece.
Your pieces should look like this:
Top stitch all your pieces 1/8" from edge of folds on each piece. For straps, top stitch both sides.
Line up top stitched edge of pocket with raw edge of bottom of body piece. Stitch down raw edge of pocket 1/4". Repeat for other body piece and pocket. Press pockets up.
Measure in 2 inches on either side of pocket edge. Measure another inch from this line. Mark. Measure another inch, mark. Repeat making marks until you meet the 2 inch line from other side. There will be 5 lines drawn. Repeat for other pocket piece. Stitch down these lines, making sure to backstitch at the start and stop of each line.
Measure in 2" from sides on top of body pieces. Place strap raw edge against top stitched edge of body piece and pin down. Repeat for other side and other piece. Sew a box around the strap making sure its secure. You can stitch an X in the box if you feel it needs to be more secure.
When this is done, place body pieces right sides together. Pin in each corner so it doesn't shift on you while sewing. Sew together with a 1/4" seam allowance. Clip corners of bag and turn right side out. It should look like this:
Congratulations, you made a mini coloring tote.
